The tenor, Hendrik Mispelon, has finished his singing studies at the conservatory of Leuven. He graduated with Catrin Wyn-Davies. Other important singing pedagogues are Philip Defrancq, Zayra Velazquez, José Pizarro, Stephan Adriaens and Andrew Richards. He is a versatile lyric tenor with a voice that suits itself to a broad range of music from Händel to Verdi.
As a soloist Hendrik has taken up the role of Monostatos in Die Zauberflöte, sung in the trio in Bernsteins Trouble in Tahiti, and performed Obadiah in Mendelssohns Elias. He is also familiar with Liedrepertoire with performances of cycles such as Dichterliebe and Hermit Songs. Hendrik is also very much appreciated in performing the evangelist in the Saint John Passion. In August Hendrik will make his debut in the role of Don Ottavio.
Hendrik has a lot of experience in ensemble and choir singing. He is a member of professional vocal ensembles such as Swara, Ghent singers and is a freelance singer of Consensus Vocalis in the Netherlands (Consensus Vocalis is the opera choir hired by the Reisopera), the opera of Liege and La Monnaie. Swara, conducted by Ivan Yohan, focuses on modern a capella music. Performed music includes works by Ligeti, Lauridsen, Whitacre, Mäntyjärvi, Rautavaara, Tormis, … With Ghent singers Ravels L’enfant et les sortilèges conducted by Otto Tausk is one of the performed works and with Consensus vocalis he has performed Britten’s War Requiem, Bernstein’s Wonderful Town, Messiah, Bruid te koop, Fidelio and Das Wunder der Heliane. Other conductors and ensembles Hendrik has sung with include BachPlus, conducted by Bart Naessens, Currende, conducted by Erik Van Nevel, Octopus, conducted by Bart Van Reyn and the Ghent university choir, conducted by Joris Derder. Performed works include Cosi fan tutte, Messiah, Requiem by Brahms, Fauré and Verdi, Carmina Burana, Child of our time, Saint Matthew Passion and many others. At the opera of Liège he participated in the following productions: Rigoletto, Simon Boccanegra, Lakmé, Il Turco in Italia and Alzira. At La Monnaie he is currently participating in Nostaliga and Rivoluzione, two operas based on Verdi’s early operas, and Turandot.
